A female Grama Niladhari officer attached to the Mangala Eliya division in the Mundalama Divisional Secretariat has lodged a complaint with the Mundalama Police, alleging that National People’s Power (NPP / Malima) Puttalam District Member of Parliament Vimal Rohana verbally abused and threatened her with death using obscene language.
According to the complaint, the MP allegedly shouted abusive remarks such as, “I don’t care who you are as a Grama Sevaka… I won’t allow you to work here again… I am the MP here,” while using offensive language.
The Grama Niladhari officer stated that she was engaged in distributing bottled drinking water provided by the Mundalama Divisional Secretariat to residents displaced due to a disaster in her division. During this time, while traveling on the Samindugama Road in Mangala Eliya, her motorcycle was allegedly struck by a black DIMO Batta-type lorry driven by MP Vimal Rohana.
She further alleged that after getting down from the lorry, the MP pointed at her and verbally abused and threatened her. The registration number of the vehicle involved, NW–PW 5907, was recorded by the complainant.
Following the incident, the Grama Niladhari officer immediately informed the Mundalama Divisional Secretary by telephone. The Divisional Secretary later arrived at the scene, advised both parties to avoid escalating the situation, and resolved the dispute amicably, police said.
Two days later, a Disaster Management Committee meeting was held under the leadership of the Divisional Secretary, during which she again advised both the Grama Niladhari officer and the MP to work together without conflict.
However, the complaint further states that on the same day, the MP allegedly called the officer on her mobile phone and threatened her while questioning why water had not been supplied to his main residence. It was also alleged that on an earlier occasion (on the 5th), the MP had taken bottled water that was meant to be distributed to disaster-affected individuals.
When an Economic Development Officer questioned the MP regarding the matter, the complaint claims that the MP verbally abused and threatened both the Grama Niladhari officer and the Economic Development Officer.
The complainant stated that she initially refrained from lodging complaints due to mediation by the Divisional Secretary on two occasions. However, she later decided to file a complaint as she continued to face accusations and difficulties, including being transferred out of her Grama Niladhari division.
Investigations are being carried out under the direction of Mundalama Police Officer-in-Charge, Chief Inspector Asitha Lakruwan.
