All tax payments go electronic from April 1

Electronic methods are to be made compulsory for the payment of personal taxes to the Inland Revenue Department from April 1.

To give effect to the decision, an amendment to the Inland Revenue Act has been introduced by the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies.

According to the amendment, a person is expected to file tax returns electronically through the use of a computer system or a mobile electronic device.

However, depending on the case, the Inland Revenue Commissioner-General may authorise a person to file a tax return in writing, for a year of assessment, the proposed amendment says.

At present, it is compulsory for companies to file their tax returns electronically.

Inland Revenue Staff Officers Association Secretary J.T. Chandana expressed the association’s support for the new amendment. However, he said the IRD had no “necessary system device capacity” to facilitate it.

“Devices should be in good condition and modified or the taxpayers and the Department would be inconvenienced. It will affect the tax revenue as well,” he said, adding that the responsibilities were being passed on.
